The incident happened in Yonkers on Tuesday morning, Oct. 10, when a motorist lost control of their vehicle and crashed into the Waring Avenue side of Yonkers Public School 9 at 53 Fairview St., Yonkers Police announced.
The collision created a gaping hole in the school's kitchen and knocked bricks from the exterior wall.
Although the school suffered damage, luckily, the incident happened before students arrived and resulted in no injuries within the building. The driver suffered minor injuries and was treated, according to police.
As a result of the crash, students are now being re-routed to Roosevelt High School at 631 Tuckahoe Rd. to resume their classes after Columbus Day weekend. Parents and guardians picking up their students at the end of the day should travel there instead of Public School 9, police said, adding that those taking the bus will be picked up at Roosevelt and brought to routine drop-off locations.
Yonkers Public Schools staff will advise parents and students of any future class relocation plans for the damaged school.
The crash is currently being investigated as a motor vehicle accident with no criminal element, according to Yonkers Police.
